Our Story

Plainly Does It is an independent online store based in North Yorkshire.

The idea came from a very ordinary part of life. Over a few years, life changed a lot. We got married, moved home, our family grew and, like most families, we were juggling work, children and everything else that comes with it.

Somewhere amongst all of that, I realised just how much time I spent shopping around for the things I actually liked.

Clothes from one place. Something for the house from another. A candle somewhere else. Then a card, a gift or something for the children.

It wasn't that there wasn't enough choice. There was almost too much of it.

I wanted somewhere I could trust to have already done some of that searching for me. Somewhere things had been chosen carefully, worked well together and felt worth buying.

Eventually, Plainly Does It became the place I had been looking for myself.

The original idea for Plainly Does It was clothing.

I wanted somewhere I could find a simple capsule wardrobe without searching across endless websites. Good quality everyday pieces, easy multipacks and clothes that could be mixed and matched without having to think too hard about what went with what.

I wanted to be able to choose a few things from one place and know they would work together.

That idea hasn't gone away. Clothing is still part of where I want to take Plainly.

But the more I thought about what I wanted from clothes, the more I realised I was looking for exactly the same thing everywhere else too.

Our Philosophy

Life is busy enough without having to overthink every purchase.

I wanted Plainly Does It to be somewhere you could shop knowing that the quality had been considered, the pieces had been chosen carefully and they would work with things you already own.

That means looking for good quality, simple design, useful pieces and things that feel worth having for the long term.

Whether it's something for your home, something to give, or eventually something to wear, the thinking is the same.

Less searching. Less second-guessing. Good things, chosen to make life a little simpler.

Chosen, not just stocked

Today, Plainly brings together home decor, lighting, candles and home fragrance, faux flowers and plants, greeting cards and gifts.

What I choose matters, but so does where it comes from.

I love finding independent makers and British brands that really care about what they do, alongside trusted suppliers whose products fit naturally into the collection.

When I'm choosing something for Plainly, I look at more than the product itself. Quality matters, but I also like knowing a little about who made it, how it's made and the story behind the business.

The aim is simply to bring together good things that feel considered, useful and easy to live with.

Some come from small independent makers and others from established brands. They don't all have to come from the same place, they just need to feel right together.

And ultimately, if I wouldn't choose something myself, it probably isn't right for Plainly.

Plain doesn't have to mean boring.

Why Plainly?

For me, it's about keeping things simple. Colours that are easy to live with, useful shapes, good textures and pieces that work with what you already have.

I'm drawn to things that aren't just for right now. Things you can keep, move around and use in different ways as your home changes.

Because real homes aren't finished all at once.

Rooms change. Families grow. Things get moved around. Something new sits next to something you've had for years, and not everything needs to match perfectly.

I want Plainly to fit into that kind of home.

Less fuss. Less searching. Things that simply work.

Behind Plainly

Plainly Does It may be an online shop, but there's still a real person behind it.

I'm the one looking for new products, speaking to suppliers and makers, deciding what makes the collection, putting things together, working on the website and thinking about what Plainly should do next.

There's plenty more I want Plainly to become, including eventually bringing the clothing idea that started all of this to life.

But however it grows, I want the idea behind it to stay the same.

Life is busy. Finding good things shouldn't have to be.
