Candle gifts for men: a guide to richer, deeper scents

Candle gifts for men: a guide to richer, deeper scents

Candle gifts for men can be harder to choose than they sound. You want something thoughtful and useful, but fragrance is personal and the usual gift ideas do not always feel quite right.

A good place to start is with the scents someone already gravitates towards. If they prefer woody aftershave, leather, coffee, whisky, warm spice or the smell of the outdoors over sweeter or more floral fragrance, a deeper home scent can make a considered gift.

That is exactly what drew us to Bro Candle. The range brings together tobacco, leather, sandalwood, oud, black pepper, whisky, roasted coffee, birch, pine and other richer notes, giving us a different side of home fragrance to sit alongside the softer scents already at Plainly.

Why we chose Bro Candle

We wanted to bring something slightly different into the Plainly home fragrance edit. Something warm, grounded and full of character, without feeling novelty-led or overdone.

Bro Candle began in the UK in 2024 after founder Casey struggled to find candles that felt made with men in mind. The result is a range built around richer, traditionally masculine fragrance profiles, from tobacco and aged leather to sandalwood, oud, whisky and smoky woods.

The candles are hand-poured in the UK using natural soy wax, with a burn time of 50+ hours. Many of the scents are also available as matching reed diffusers, so the same fragrance can be enjoyed with or without a flame.

For us, though, the appeal is broader than the label of men's fragrance. These are simply warm, distinctive scents for anyone who prefers woods, leather, spice, smoke and deeper fragrance notes.

How to choose candle gifts for men

Rather than trying to decide which candle feels the most masculine, think about the fragrance family that sounds most like the person you are buying for.

Warm and classic Look for tobacco, leather, sandalwood and spice.
Deep and woody Try oud, sandalwood, vetiver and darker woods.
Fresh but grounded Bergamot, birch, pine and citrus keep things lighter.
A little different Whisky, coffee or sea salt make less expected gifts.

Tobacco and leather for a warm, familiar scent

If you are unsure where to start, The Gentleman Tobacco & Leather Scented Candle is one of the easiest scents in the range to understand.

It brings together citrus, tobacco leaf, aged leather and spice, with warmer woody notes underneath. The result feels warm and settled rather than overly smoky.

It is a particularly good option for someone who already likes woody aftershave, leather, warm interiors or classic fragrance.

Oud and sandalwood for something deeper

For someone who already enjoys woody or oud-based fragrance, The Imperial Oud & Sandalwood Scented Candle has more depth.

Oud wood, sandalwood and vetiver create a rich woody base. It is the sort of fragrance to choose when you know the person likes stronger evening scents, deeper aftershaves or darker woods.

Leather and sandalwood for something bolder

The Outlaw Leather & Suede Scented Candle moves into a stronger leather-led scent. Leather is paired with bergamot, sandalwood and ylang ylang, giving it warmth without making it feel one-dimensional.

This is one to choose when you already know the person likes darker, richer fragrance. It has more presence than some of the fresher scents in the range.

Sandalwood and black pepper for warm spice

The Shakespeare Sandalwood & Black Pepper Scented Candle is warmer and more aromatic, combining sandalwood, patchouli, black pepper and clove.

The pepper and clove bring spice, while sandalwood keeps the fragrance grounded. It is a good middle ground if you want depth without moving fully into leather or oud.

Fresh scents with a deeper base

Not every candle gift for men needs to smell dark or smoky. Fresher fragrance can still have enough depth to feel warm and grounded.

The Gladiator combines bergamot, blackcurrant and apple with birch. The fruit and citrus keep the fragrance fresh, while birch gives it a woodier finish.

The Boy Scout has more of an outdoors-inspired feel, using bergamot, blackcurrant, tonka, oakmoss and pine. It is a good option for someone drawn to earthy, woody or forest-like scents.

Whisky, coffee and less expected candle gifts

If you want something a little less predictable, some of the most interesting scents in the range move away from the usual wood, leather and spice combination.

The Old Fashioned is smooth and warming, with aged whisky, bitters, sugar and citrus. It makes sense for someone who enjoys richer, drinks-inspired fragrance.

The Morning Glory centres around roasted coffee with wood, amber musk and citrus. It is warm and familiar without becoming overly sweet.

The Gentleman's Barber combines sandalwood, oud, vetiver and leather for a more traditional barbershop-inspired scent.

The Castaway is lighter, combining sea salt and coconut with sandalwood, moss and cedarwood. It suits someone who prefers fresher fragrance but still wants warmth underneath.

If you are still not sure which scent to choose

For Dad: The Gentleman or The Old Fashioned are useful starting points if he likes warm, familiar fragrance.

For Grandad: The Gentleman or The Gentleman's Barber have classic tobacco, leather, sandalwood and barbershop-style notes.

For a partner: The Imperial Oud or The Outlaw work well if they already like richer woody or leather fragrances.

For someone outdoorsy: The Boy Scout brings together pine, oakmoss and woody notes.

For a coffee lover: The Morning Glory is the obvious place to start.

For someone who prefers fresher scents: Try The Gladiator or The Castaway.

Gifts for Dad, Grandad, partners and hard-to-buy-for men

Home fragrance can work particularly well when you want something thoughtful without having to guess at clothing sizes, hobbies or another gadget they may not need.

The easiest way to make it feel personal is to connect the fragrance to something they already like. Someone who wears woody aftershave may enjoy sandalwood or oud. A coffee lover may naturally lean towards Morning Glory. Someone who enjoys whisky or deeper evening scents may prefer The Old Fashioned or The Gentleman.

It does not need to be more complicated than that. Start with the person, then choose the scent.

Candle or reed diffuser?

The same fragrance can feel quite different depending on how it is used, so it is worth thinking about the person as much as the scent.

Choose a candle

A candle suits someone who enjoys the ritual of lighting fragrance in the evening, while reading, working or simply settling into a room.

Bro Candle's candles are hand-poured in the UK using natural soy wax, with a burn time of 50+ hours.

Choose a reed diffuser

A reed diffuser gives a more constant background scent without a flame, which works particularly well in living rooms, hallways and home offices.

The 100ml Bro Candle diffusers use natural fibre reeds and are designed to fragrance a room for approximately 10 to 12 weeks.

If you already know which fragrance they like, pairing the matching candle and diffuser is also an easy way to create a more complete home fragrance gift.

Choose fragrance by scent, not stereotype

Bro Candle was created around men's fragrance, and that is part of what makes the range different. Tobacco, leather, oud, whisky, black pepper and smoky woods are all notes traditionally associated with masculine fragrance.

But fragrance does not really need a gender once it is in the home. Plenty of people simply prefer these scents because they are warm, rich, woody and grounded.

So use the men's fragrance label as a useful starting point rather than a rule. The best candle is the one that sounds most like the person you are buying it for.

Candle gifts for men: common questions

What candle scents make good gifts for men?

Woody, smoky, spicy and leather-led fragrances are common choices. Sandalwood, oud, tobacco, leather, whisky, black pepper, birch, pine and cedarwood are useful notes to look for if the person tends to prefer deeper scents.

What is a safe candle scent to buy if I am unsure?

A balanced woody fragrance is usually easier to choose than the strongest leather or oud scent. The Gentleman combines warmer tobacco and leather with citrus and spice, while The Gladiator uses fresh bergamot and fruit over a woody birch base.

Are candles a good Father's Day gift?

They can be, particularly for someone who enjoys fragrance, interiors or relaxing at home. Choosing the scent around what he already likes makes the gift feel more considered than simply buying something labelled for men.

Are reed diffusers good gifts for men?

Yes. They are particularly useful for someone who enjoys home fragrance but does not regularly burn candles. A reed diffuser provides a more constant scent and does not require a flame.

Are men's candles only for men?

No. Terms such as men's candle or masculine fragrance generally describe the style of the scent. Woody, leathery, smoky and spicy fragrances can be enjoyed by anyone.
