Embers & Roots is a family-run Yorkshire business creating hand-poured soy candles and home fragrances inspired by nature and the seasons. Each candle is made in small batches in a solar-powered barn surrounded by woodland.

The story behind the brand

From a hobby to a family business

Embers & Roots began when founder Sadie started making candles as a hobby. She loved home fragrance and enjoyed arts and crafts, so decided to learn how to make candles herself.

She had no intention of starting a business, but friends and family soon began asking to buy her candles, both for themselves and as gifts.

In May 2017, Sadie opened an Etsy shop and began turning her hobby into a business. What started with handmade candles has since grown into a family-run Yorkshire home fragrance brand.

Today, Embers & Roots continues to make its candles by hand in a converted barn surrounded by Yorkshire woodland, taking time to test fragrances and pour each candle in small batches.

Where the name comes from

The name Embers & Roots reflects two important parts of the business.

Embers represents the warmth and glow of a candle, and the simple pleasure of lighting one at the end of the day.

Roots represents family, including the wooden boxes made by Sadie's grandad Kevan.

It's a personal connection that brings together the warmth of home fragrance and the family's history.

Vegan & cruelty-free

Products made without animal-derived ingredients or animal testing.

Packaging with purpose

Recyclable, plastic-free packaging and amber candle jars that can be reused.

The brand also encourages customers to give their empty candle jars another use, whether for plant cuttings, flowers or small household items. Its published packaging approach includes recycled paper, paper tape and reusing suitable boxes received from suppliers.

Cottage Garden, Neroli Blossom and Lemon Thyme & Lavender capture the freshness of the new season.

Orange & Basil, Blackberry Bush and Heirloom bring together brighter, garden-inspired fragrances.

Eventide, Fig & Forest and Wild Pomegranate reflect the richer, warmer character of autumn.

I wanted Plainly Does It to introduce customers to independent businesses with genuine stories behind their products. As a Yorkshire business myself, I particularly liked discovering Embers & Roots and the family story behind it.

Sadie's journey from making candles as a hobby to building a business really appealed to me, along with the attention given to the fragrances, small-batch production and packaging.
